Discussing his translation of Maupertuis's Figure de la Terre (which had just been published). Expressing surprise that the principle criticism of the work was written by Maupertuis himself. Discussing an extremely interesting letter Koenig had received from Voltaire, reporting that he has left King Solomon [i.e. Frederic the Great] because of his love for the queen of Sheba [i.e. Madame du Chatelet]. Criticizing Madame du Chatelet's recent Institutions de Physique (1740).

Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Châtelet was a French natural philosopher and mathematician from the early 1730s until her death due to complications during childbirth in 1749.
